I had been living with pain in my left shoulder and neck for probably the last 30 years… probably from sitting in front of a computer all day. I had tried everything to get rid of it…doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors and masseuses… nothing worked. I was even walking crooked to favor that shoulder. My friends who had back pain were taking injections in their spine and having a machine stretch out their vertebrae…I didn’t really want to try that.

I met Jacob through my physical trainer Cheryl Schoen, who also happens to be Jacob’s mother, so I was a little skeptical when she recommended that I consult him. I signed up for four sessions…after all, what did I have to lose? I’d tried most everything else. Jake showed me the ELDOA exercises, and I did them faithfully every morning….and slowly, slowly, my neck and shoulder pain went away. And as long as I do the exercises, it stays away.

I then recommended Jake to my sister, who has ankle and knee pains from a motorcycle accident. She was taking four pain pills just to get out of bed in the morning, She also went to four sessions and is now able to dance without pain. If you have any kind of pain at all, I totally recommend that you see Jake and let him teach you how to stay out of pain naturally. It certainly worked for me. After all, what do you have to lose except your pain?

I was rear-ended in an automobile accident on November 24, 2014, resulting in injuries to my neck.  I already had loss of cartilage in my spine due to osteoarthritis, but the accident greatly exacerbated the discs compressing and pinching the nerves.  Initially I treated with a chiropractor, receiving electrical stimulation and dry needling for several months.  When the pain continued to worsen, I saw an orthopedist who referred me to a pain management specialist.  Over the next several months I received two epidural steroid injections and several nerve ablations in my cervical spine, C-2 through C-7.  I got only moderate temporary relief from these procedures.  I also consulted with a neurosurgeon who concluded I was not a candidate for surgery.

The pain management doctor sent me to a physical therapist in November 2015 who specialized in manual physical therapy.  I did receive some relief, but it was only sustainable as long as I was in treatment twice a week.  

I felt there had to be something that would relieve my pain longer than a few hours or days following a treatment.  In August 2016 I began physical therapy with a specialist in the McKenzie Method and immediately began getting pain relief I could sustain.  I was given exercises to do on my own frequently throughout the day every day, and these lead to greater mobility, flexibility and pain relief.  I continue to do these neck exercises daily.  But there was still something else I felt I needed to get more space between my vertebrae, and my McKenzie therapist recommended I see another physical therapist, Jacob Schoen.

Jacob specializes in the ELDOA method.  I have only treated with Jacob twice, each visit lasting approximately an hour and a half.  The first was an orthopedic and postural assessment on November 15, 2016.  In this first session, Jacob taught me how to do two exercises on a pad on the floor that focus mostly on the lower back while benefiting the entire spine by stretching and elongating it.  He filmed me doing these using my iPhone so that I could refer to the videos as I do the exercises daily at home.  He also photographed me from the side as I was standing straight. This photograph revealed my slumped shoulders and bad posture.  He taught me a simple exercise to do anytime I am standing that corrects my posture and makes me look 10 years younger!  

On November 29, 2016 I had a second exercise session and program instruction that included four more exercises to do daily at home.  Again, he videoed the exercises with his voiced instructions for use as reference.  All of the exercises are done while lying on a pad on the floor and take one to two minutes each to complete, for a total of only 15 minutes! I can also call him whenever I have a question or need to check in.  

I have not missed a day without doing these exercises! Sometimes I do them twice a day since they take so little time.  The results are remarkable. I move better with much less or no pain, my posture is improved, and I am even sleeping better. I initially thought him expensive, but the fact is he designed a treatment program specifically for me in just two sessions that I can easily do for my lifetime to maintain a pain free existence. I’m pain free!  For the first time in 50 years, I’m not experiencing back, shoulder, hip, or neck pain and it’s because of Jacob and what he taught me about maintaining my spinal alignment with ELDOA.

 I first learned about ELDOA a year ago when I injured my back falling backwards down several stairs finally crashing into a wall.  I didn’t get hurt bad enough to go to urgent care, and I’m kind of tough, so I thought I could just shake it off.  After several days of ice, heat and Advil, I realized I needed medical care.  I had gone to my chiropractor several times but didn’t get much relief.  The pain wouldn’t leave and I actually felt worse immediately after adjustments and therapy. 

 After a few weeks, I was in so much pain that I considered acupuncture although I’m not a fan.  Previously, I had a neck condition that my chiropractor couldn’t relieve so I tried acupuncture.  While it eventually helped, I wasn’t won over.  I found the process time consuming, irritating, expensive, and inconvenient; overall not worth it.  So I wasn’t eager to try it again even though I was in a lot of pain.

 I met Jacob at a social function where instead of walking, I was shuffling, half-bent forward.  We got into a conversation about my condition and I was so desperate for help that I made an appointment on the spot.  What he said made a lot of sense and I was in pain, a lot of it, what did I have to lose.  Two days later, I visited Jacob and after a thorough assessment and training, I walked out upright with less pain than I felt prior to my injury.

 I’ve lived most of my life with back pain caused by two spinal curves and hip rotation.  The pain started when I was around 13-years old but wasn’t diagnosed until I was 19.  At that point, I was told that I would probably require chiropractic adjustments for the rest of my life.  This turned out to be true until I met Jacob and learned ELDOA. 

The techniques I learned have helped me naturally relieve pressure from my vertebra.  It only takes me 10 minutes a day, it’s not strenuous and I don’t need any special equipment.  I can do it at home as well as traveling, it’s that easy.  ELDOA has been a positive life-changing experience for me.  I just wish I had learned it 40-years ago!

 If you have chronic back pain, you would definitely benefit from a visit with Jacob.  He’s very knowledgeable and completely committed to his work.  The assessment is non-invasive and so worth it!
